Background of the study
Handedness, the preference for using one hand over the other, is a complex trait influenced by genetic, environmental, and cultural factors. In Oyo West, left-handed individuals represent a unique segment of the population, and emerging research suggests that genetic factors may play a pivotal role in determining handedness (Adeyemi, 2023). Studies have identified certain genetic markers that are more prevalent among left-handed individuals, indicating a hereditary component in the development of this trait (Ogunleye, 2024). Moreover, cultural perceptions and social stigmas associated with left-handedness may influence how these individuals navigate daily life, potentially affecting educational and occupational outcomes (Ibrahim, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate the genetic influences on handedness among left-handed individuals in Oyo West by analyzing genetic data and comparing it with behavioral assessments. Integrating genetic and sociocultural perspectives is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of handedness and its broader implications on individual identity and performance.
Statement of the problem
Despite increasing interest in the genetic determinants of handedness, there is limited localized research on left-handed individuals in Oyo West. The lack of detailed genetic and behavioral analyses prevents a full understanding of the hereditary factors that influence handedness. This gap hinders the development of targeted educational and occupational support for left-handed individuals, who may face unique challenges. This study aims to address this deficiency by evaluating the genetic influence on handedness, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of this trait and its implications for personal and social development (Adeyemi, 2023).

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it explores the genetic basis of handedness among left-handed individuals, offering insights into the hereditary influences on this trait. The findings could inform educational and occupational strategies tailored to the needs of left-handed individuals (Adeyemi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating the genetic influence on handedness among left-handed individuals in Oyo West Local Government Area. Broader environmental or cultural factors influencing handedness are not addressed.
